MAWS On the Mountain

MAWS on the Mountain

The 2004 Conference of the Montana Association of Weavers and Spinners will be July 8-11, on Big Mountain in Whitefish Montana.

Join us for wonderful instructors in a vacation capital of the world. Half-way up Big Mountain, the views of the Flathead Valley are breathtaking. At Big Mountain there is hiking, mountain biking, gondola rides, shopping and good eating. Glacier National Park, Flathead Lake, good fishing and more than ten golf courses are nearby. The communities of Whitefish, Kalispell and Bigfork all offer numerous art galleries and excellent restaurants.

But, enough tourist information! What you really want to know about is the conference. MAWS on the Mountain begins on Thursday, July 8, in the evening with preparations for Friday’s dye sessions. You will receive a 54” silk scarf in your “goody bag” to dye on Friday.

Friday is Dye-day! Everyone will have the opportunity to toss something into the central dye pots: silk scarves, skeins, Ikat, Shibori, painted warp, space dyed yarns and skeins. All techniques will be taught. Judith MacKenzie will facilitate this experience. The group will be split in half with everyone dyeing for half of the day and taking workshops the other. Dyepots will be protein dyepots, so bring your wool, silk and other animal fiber yarns.

On Saturday there will be one-day workshops and seminars. Instructors include Judith MacKenzie, Lillian Whipple, Bonnie Tarses, Janet Szabo, Judie Overbeek, Elaine Hammer. Fresh from Convergence, Kathryn Alexander will have a trunk show.

Other learning activities include open show and fashion show and an award banquet and much sharing of ideas. Of course we will have wonderful fiber vendors too!

Our goal is to keep it simple in form but high in quality—like a retreat—with time to relax, network, shop and play as well as to learn.
